Clinton River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: July 3, 2011
Nearest City: Auburn Hills, MI
Difficulty: Moderate

Description:

Today my buddy and I canoed the Clinton River from Adams Road to Yates Dam. Total time was 6 hours including stops to fish. Though it stormed last night, the river was on the low side. That was fortunate, because both of us are experienced paddlers, and we both found it moderately challenging.

There are repeated chutes, minor rapids, and riffles mixed with hairpin turns and logjams throughout. Dangerous conditions exist. We nearly ditched on five occasions, owing to high-centers on the boulders and ramming log jams. A kayak is much better suited for this stretch of the river.

It was beautiful, scenic, and we didn't see anyone else on the river until the very end. Lots of fun.

I would definitely NOT recommend this stretch of river for beginners. I would avoid this river like the plague during a high water event.

Have fun, and be safe.
