Big Wills Creek - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip
Day Trip Report
May 21, 2011
Fort Payne, AL
All along Big Wills Creek there are place to put in and get out. My husband and I went last weekend and put in near the Courthouse in Lebanon, and floated down to the road that the Sandvalley Landfill is on. We got out at the bridge that crosses over the creek. It was by far the best spot we have found on the creek.
There were a few of trees that we had to cross over, due to the weather that we had recieved prior. But other than the trees it was beautiful. Rock bottom for the mot part, and mulitple beaches to pull off on. Very relaxing flat water, with rapids along the way. When the water is up, I imagine this creek would be so much better. When we got out there, we didn't have to paddle much, the water was flowing pretty good, and along with the rapids, it was a blast. (3hr with multiple stops) Not to mention all the wildlife we saw. A beaver, a mink, and a turtle that we believe wanted to come for a ride.
If you haven't checked out Big Wills, must do. Normally we would put in at Shiloh Baptist church and float down to the Courthouse. (4-5 hr float)
Big Wills is a blessing most people do not know about. We are trying to clean it up.
None, most of the land that borders the creek is owned, mainly wooded, and fields. No accommodations.
From Fort Payne, turn right onto Lebanon road, from County Jail, follow till right on County Rd 52. Turn left at courthouse follow till road curves and can go straight into a corn field. (little dirt road) Swimming hole back in the wood where you can put in. Take out-- Turn right on to Lebanon Rd, follow till you see signs of Landfill, take right, first bridge you come to.
