South Branch Potomac River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: September 6, 2010
Nearest City: Springfield, WV
Difficulty: Easy

Our intrepid group has paddled a good part of the South Branch, from South of Romney up to the Springfield area. The water has been very low this summer, but we took off for the Blue Bridge on State Route 28 after hearing there was sufficient water for a trip. We had 5 kayaks and a canoe, with experience ranging from somewhat to very.

Finding the put-in was tricky; it is marked as a public access place, but there was a trailer with a chain pulled across the place. With no one home we tiptoed past and put the boats in the water. There were some riffles which created a few hiccups since the water was low, but no major problems.

We saw several bald eagles and many folks fishing along the river. This was a short trip lasting about 2 hours - you can put in further upstream to lengthen your trip, or take out further downriver. This day our take-out was at Milleson's Mill Walnut Grove Campground.

Make sure you drive no faster than 5 mph to get to the river. There is a nominal fee for using the riverfront - $10 per car?

This is an easy paddle within easy driving distance of Cumberland, MD or Winchester, VA.

At put-in - nothing.
At Milleson's Mill Campground there is a store and a portapotty if you are truly desperate. Pizza shop in Springfield along with a general store, with more civilization in Romney.

There is a parking/usage fee at the Campground, I think it's $10 per car.

Put in - State Route 28 to the Blue Bridge between Springfield and Romney. Follow the signs for water access; there is limited parking.

Take out - State Route 28 to Springfield - at the sharp curve in town go straight along Springfield Gap Road. Go 3 or 4 miles, until you reach the sharp left bend that will take you to the river - at the bend turn right on the dirt road. Follow that for 3 or so miles until you come to the campground. There are signs for assistance.
