North Canadian River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: August 2010
Nearest City: Oklahoma City, OK
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: Michael Wilson

Description:

The North Canadian is great for a relaxing day trip. I went with the OKC Herpetological Society to view wildlife as we paddled upstream and then floated back down to the lake. There is a lot of wildlife to be seen in Stinchcomb, including turtles, huge bullfrogs lounging on the bank and lots of birds.

I would like to correct another poster on the presence of "water moccasins". Cottonmouths (the only venomous watersnake in Oklahoma) are not found in central Oklahoma. There are snakes here, but only harmless diamond backed watersnakes and blotched watersnakes. To see cottonmouths, you would have to travel 50 to 100 miles south or east of OKC.

Accommodations:

Nice, gentle slope down to the river to launch from. No other accommodations.

Fees:

Oklahoma Boating Permit

Directions:

The river is just north of Lake Overholser in OKC.
