Difficulty: Difficult

Description:

The Potomac River from the mouth of the Monocacy River to Point of Rocks is a pleasant, scenic paddle that is just a short drive from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The entire stretch of river is undeveloped and tree lined, and is dotted by several islands, including the Heaters Island Wildlife Management Area just below Point of Rocks. Water levels can vary significantly, depending on time of year, but the river is boatable even at low levels. Hazardous water levels are marked on the boat ramps on the Maryland side of the river.

Those wishing to float downstream can put in at Point of Rocks (see trip report for Potomac River at Point of Rocks). The C&O canal trail runs along the river and is a pleasant hike for those who are interested.

Directions:

From I-270, take route 28 West until you pass through Dickerson. After you go through Dickerson, turn left on Mouth of Monocacy Road. Follow Mouth of Monocacy Road to the boat launch area.

Launches:

There is a boat launch area on the Monocacy River just above where it joins the Potomac. It is at the end of Mouth of Monocacy Road.

Resources:

Those wishing to see a detailed road map of the area can consult the ADC maps of Montgomery and Frederick counties. The mouth of Monocacy launch area is in Montgomery county, but the rest of the float is in Frederick county.
