Flint River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: July 24, 2010
Nearest City: Albany, GA
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: brumbylance

Description:

I put in at the Radium Park Landing and paddled a approximately 9 miles to Flint River Park. Both areas have boat ramps and a shuttle service is provided by a local vendor (at the Flint River Park).

The river level was low and made for an enjoyable and smooth paddle. Just as you start your paddle you can notice a natural spring on the left hand side that you could not see if the water level was higher. At the first mile is the historic Radium Springs Bridge where I got out and walked around and felt the cool water flowing from Radium Springs. The spring is no longer accessible to the public but the bridge is still along the river and easy to get to.

There are numerous places along the route to get out and explore and several blue holes to find if you know where to look. At mile 8 is Goat Island which you will need to stay to the left since the right side is too shallow to paddle. You will pass Plant Mitchell which is a local power plant and Flint River Park will be on your left just past Plant Mitchell.

An additional 20 mile paddle is offered from Flint River Park to Newton, Georgia. Flint River Outpost also provides services for this as well.

Accommodations:

Public boat docks at put-in and take out. Rentals and shuttle service provided at Flint River Park by Flint River Outpost 229-787-3004

Fees:

No fees or permits required for either parks.

Directions:

Take Hwy 19 to Hwy 234 Oakridge Drive to US Hwy 133. Both landings are on US Hwy 133.

Resources:

This route is found in "Paddling Georgia" and I have done this route numerous times.
