Richardson Lakes - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Weekend Trip Report
Trip Dates: September 5-7, 2009
Nearest City: Andover, ME

Lower and Upper Richardson Lake

We left as a Boy Scout group from South Arm Campground on the Lower Richardson Lake. Our destination was one of the many campgrounds along the 17 mile lake, this time at the Narrows (about 6 miles away). Part of our group left at a time that was just too windy to take the risk and we opted for the shuttle up to our site. It was $65 for canoes, gear, and 5 people (worth the price when you are caring for others). We were still able to get in 15 miles of canoeing over the weekend by exploring part of the lake and doing some fishing (licenses available at the campground).

Lake Richardson is a beautiful lake, with lots of opportunity to fish, explore, and just relax. We didn't see any moose, as they seem more prevalent at the north end. Spirit Island campsite is very nice, as is Narrows 1 and Pine Island. I am sure there are many other nice sites along the way.

You can't go wrong there, especially if waiting for after Labor Day. We were there last year and had the place to ourselves for the most part. Biggest issue is the wind. You have to be flexible and ready to get off the water if need be. By going to Spirit Island and getting there early, it is easy to work around since the island is only 3 miles away.

Camp sites at the main camp, with remote wilderness sites up the entire lake.

We used Old Town canoes. They rent them there at a very reasonable price. We also took one Wilderness Kayak (14').

We paid $2 per head per night. Very reasonable. Then you have to pay for the fishing license. If out of state, they are needed for 12 and up. But a good cause.

Most will come up the highway on 95 thru Maine. After that it is several twists and turns that are best found on Mapquest or from the SouthArm Campground. A GPS is a plus.

Quiet Water - Maine, from AMC.
