Heron Lake State Park - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Destination Report
Nearest City: Tierra Amarilla, NM
Difficulty: Moderate
Submitted by: Siscily Lederman

Heron Lake State Park is QUIET! Motorized boats may not go over trolling speed and so there are no jet skis, no water skiers and no vroom vroom motors and wakes.

Heron has gorgeous views of mesas to the west, high peaks to the north and the dramatic Brazos Cliffs to the east. There are beautiful camp sites ....many close enough to the water that you can just keep your boat on the beach. Wonderful sunrises and sunsets. The park even has a brochure of suggested paddle trips.

This is a large can be smooth and calm....but can change to windy and white-capped in moments. Know your skill-level and keep an eye on the weather

camp sites, both electric & water, no hook-up sites and primitive sites. showers

from the south, take highway 64/84 past the villages of Tierra Amarilla and Los Ojos. Look for State Highway 95, turn right. Go 6.4 miles to the Heron Lake Visitor Center
