Kokosing River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip
Day Trip Report
July 1, 2009
Mt. Vernon, OH
Recently me and my friends have been going on many more canoeing trips and the river we seem to go down more and more is the Kokosing River. It is located in Knox County and goes into other surrounding counties.
If you plan to raft on this river the route can be anywhere from 5 to 7 hours depending where you undock. (3-4 hours for canoe and 2 1/2-3 if kayaking). It has a very soothing flow which is great for the family or for a few friends just wanting to go canoeing. There is a very small amount of people that travel this river which is what makes it so nice.
The other reason to travel this river is the scenery. The river has carved some very nice tall cliffs and flat rocks which allow you to stop and cook on or just take a nice break. There are 2-3 spots where the water gets a little rough which gives this river some fun, but they are not TOO rough. There are also rope swings along the river which are also very fun.
So overall I would say this river is easy-moderate, has a nice flow, and has great scenery. I would tell everybody to go down this river if they are looking for a nice 4-6 hour trip.
Kokosing Valley Camp Grounds has a small general store where you can pick up ice, canned goods, or any other camping goods. (Batteries, bug spray, etc.)
East on Rout 36 until you reach Kokosing Valley Camp Grounds (this is where you will start). You can then continue to go down Route 36 east after you let your rafts, canoes, or kayaks off at the camp grounds. After you get out of what is call Millwood, you will then veer to your left onto Route 715 till Zuck road and turn right on that. After traveling along the river for about a mile there is a place for your vehicles at the Zuck and Staats road BRIDGE.
