Mahoning River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: November 15, 2009
Nearest City: New Castle, PA
Difficulty: Easy

Description:

It was a beautiful warm November Sunday, My friends said they wanted to paddle and not get wet and not walk in water because there was not enough water to paddle. We did the Mahoning river.

The Stavich Bike trail runs parallel so you can do a one car portage with the bike. I like to put the kayak in Lowelville, OH and then drive to the bike trail head in New Castle, PA with the bike in the car and then bike up to the kayak in Lowelville then kayak back to the car.

The river is a class 1 with riffles but nothing that can get you wet. It always has water because when they built the dams in Ohio they promised to keep 2 feet of water in the river. Most of the river has about that 2 feet of water so it is good for beginners.

Every time (but today) I have seen Bald Eagles. Today I saw a herd of deer swim across the river. Most of the paddle no houses can be seen.

This is nice because it one of the places that a bike trail runs along a canoeable river.
