Monocacy River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Destination Report
Nearest City: Creagerstown, MD
Difficulty: Easy

This section of the Monocacy is a shallow, slow moving, rocky stream bordered by deciduous trees, and is very quiet and relaxing. I thought it would be particularly nice for someone who doesn't want to paddle that far, but would like to relax and enjoy the atmosphere on a short section of the stream. Although it is pretty, the water level when I went (October) was relatively low, so I wound up walking some short sections. It would probably be best paddled in a plastic rec kayak or an aluminum canoe, as the boat is likely to scrape over a few rocks. Water levels in the spring should be enough higher that this should be less of a problem.

Picnic tables at the park. No other facilities.

From I-70, take route 15 north to route 26. Take route 26 to 194. Follow 194 north to Woodsboro. From Woodsboro, take 550/Creagerstown Road toward Thurmont. After you cross the Monocacy River, take the first right into the Creagerstown park. Turn right again at the first opportunity and follow the road to the river.

Boat ramp on the west side of the route 550 bridge over the Monocacy River.
