Chattahoochee River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: April 10, 2010
Nearest City: Whitesburg, GA
Difficulty: Easy

I put in at Capps Ferry Rd at the Fulton County Line. There is a small trail on the side of the road to put into the river but be careful since its a pretty steep grade to get to it. On top of that, I don't believe there is any parking so someone will need to drop you off.

When I got into the river, it was a smooth ride since the river was pretty high. No real issues since it was so high too. The entire ride was a peaceful and quiet break.

Passed under an unused railroad bridge north of Hwy 16. It was a pretty neat site. After that, you'll pass the bridge at 16 and another in-use railroad bridge. Shortly after that, I passed Yates power plant which has a "rapid" by the wastegate. Shoot it straight through the middle and paddle hard and you'll have no issues.

The ideal takeout is at McIntosh Reserve. It's closed right now due to the floods last year. I ended up taking out on the Coweta County (left) side of the river at Bob Brewster Rd which is just north of McIntosh.

Overall its a great ride. Overall the float took around 3 hours but would be an easy stretch to 4 or 5 if you wanted to relax a little more.

McIntosh reserve has restrooms, campsites, and parking. There are no facilities at Capps Ferry. At Hwy 16 bridge there is a boat ramp, but no real facilities.

$2 to park in McIntosh. There is a fee to camp as well.

Take Hwy 92 to the Hooch (92 is Capps Ferry). Take out is off of Hwy 5 at McIntosh Reserve.
