I got off work at 4:00pm, Susan and I decided to just go down to the river and get our kayaks wet for a couple of hours. We get there about 5:30pm and the river looked like it was up a little bit and the water was running a little faster than norm, but didn't look like a real threat.
We get our kayaks in the water and as soon as we did, the water took us down stream, we had no real choice but go with the flow. It was to swift to paddle back to our cars. The next place to get out of the river was 7 miles down river at Gosport. Buy this time the sun was starting to set. We knew we were in for a trip we had not planned for. Wasn't long and we had to pull out our head lamps and turned them on. We couldn't see four feet in front of our kayaks. We could hear water roaring over downed trees in the river but couldn't see it.
At one point I heard something next to my kayak and turned to Susan and said there is something as big as me swimming next to my boat. Turned out to be a beaver half as long as my kayak! We finally reached Gosport about 9:30 pm. Cold, wet and very very dark. It was an unplanned trip that taught us both a lesson. Thank God I packed those lights!
