Candlewood Lake - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Destination Report
Nearest City: Brookfield, CT
Difficulty: Moderate

A nice place to drop a kayak or canoe is Candlewood Lake in Brookfield. I like to enter from Lattin's Cove, which is right off of Candlewood Lake Rd.

Park at the lot, carry your boat down to the water, and it's a nice calm mile through the cove out to the open lake. Because there's a "no wake" rule in the cove, it's an easy paddle out. However, on weekends and nice summer days, the open lake gets very choppy with all the power boat traffic. Waves do get high enough to roll into my kayak. I'd advise going out very early or putting on a kayak skirt.

Out in the water, the lake is great for distance paddling (25 miles long), fishing, and lake house sightseeing.

Lattin's Cove - From Federal Road, drive up Candlewood Lake Road to the top of the hill. Turn left onto Nabby Road and drive about a mile. Turn left at 40 Acre Mountain Rd and then immediately right into the parking lot.
