Tully Lake - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Destination Report
Nearest City: Athol, MA
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: garym053

Description:

Tully Lake is a man-made area behind a flood control dam near Athol, MA. It was a neat paddle, mostly due to the numerous coves and islands. There was a definite lack of wildlife. Possibly due to the lakes acidity? Motors are limited to 10 hp or less. After paddling around Tully Lake, we headed up the Tully River towards Long Pond, a mile or mile and a half up river. We had to portage over one beaver dam, found a twisting route through another one before coming out on Long Pond. I wouldn't compare it to Green River Reservoir (VT) or Lake Umbagog (NH), but it was one of the nicer paddles we've had in Mass., where it seems getting to the fish is more important than who or what you run over on your way!

Accommodations:

Tully Lake Camping area has 24 primitive sites, you must carry in about a 100 yards or so from parking lot. We camped at Lake Dennison State Park about 1/2 hour away near Winchendon, MA

Fees:

No day use fees at Tully Lake. Not sure what the fees are at Tully Lake Camping area, fees are $10 per night resident/$12 per night non resident at Lake Dennison

Directions:

There's two put ins, one at the US Army Corp of Engineers Flood Control dam on Rte 32, 4 miles North of Athol. Or take Doane Hill Road off of either Rte 32 or Athol Road, if coming from Rte 32, put in is on Left just after the Tully Lake Camping area and just over the Tully River. If coming off Athol Rd., put in is on Right just before the Tully River.
