Juniper Creek - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: June 13, 2009
Nearest City: Silver Springs, FL
Difficulty: Moderate/Difficult
Submitted by: Leiah

Description:

Took the seven mile, four hour trip down the Juniper Springs run. The current was fairly swift after we entered into the main creek past the springhead. The springhead section is very narrow (about 8 feet wide) and shallow (maybe 1 1/2 feet deep) but very beautiful with crystal clear water and white sand bottom.

Once you get into the main creek, the current picks up and it takes some skill to keep out of the bushes! Very pretty paddle. Saw one good sized gator and tons of turtles.

Accommodations:

Juniper Springs is a nice campground, the sites are clean and well situated for privacy. There is NO electricity anywhere in the park. Gates are locked at 8 p.m. and if you're not there by 9:30 you are out of luck for the night. Call ahead!
The swimming area of the springs is under construction until Sept. 2009 and unavailable. Be prepared to tote your own kayak quite a ways down the trail to the springhead. You cannot use the carts unless you rent a canoe.

Fees:

$17 per night

Directions:

Located in Ocala National Forest.
