Canton Lake - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Destination Report
Nearest City: Canton, OK
Difficulty: Easy

Description:

Under management of Corps of Engineers, Canton Lake is 7,900 acres with 45 miles of shoreline, including islands in northern half of lake. Surrounded by 5 camping parks and waterfowl refuge, there is abundance of nature to enjoy. 1 mi. NW of Canton on SH-51 and 2 mi. north on SH-58-A between Canton and Longdale.

During drought in late summer, lake may be drained down to supply water to recreational lakes in Oklahoma City, so in those conditions, call Corps at 580-886-2989 to check on level of water before making trip.

No special precautions needed beyond staying vigilant, but riprap that lines the shores in southern parts of lake to prevent erosion is also a great haven for moccasins.

In flat water, it can take 7 hours of hard paddling to run perimeter of lake or a full weekend to explore the coves.

Accommodations:

Full accommodations from primitive to full hook-up. Each area has boat ramp.

Fees:

Honor system envelopes for ramps and sites in most areas, esp. out of peak seasons.

Directions:

There are two parks on eastern shore, one at the dam and the Longdale Recreation area, but on SH-58-A. In Longdale, turn west at Blackjack Cafe. Cross the dam on SH-51 to three larger parks on western shore, especially with a larger camper.
