Flint River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Destination Report
Nearest City: Huntsville, AL
Difficulty: Easy

Flint River is located in northern Madison county and runs south to the Tennessee River. There are several spots to put in at. The best places to put in at are HWY 72 E, HWY 431 S, Old HWY 431, Clouds Cove Rd, and Hobbs Island Rd. Those same spots are also great for take outs. Typical trips last any were from 1.5hrs to day and a half. For the weekend trips put in at 72 and your take out point will be Whitesburg marina on Hobbs Island rd along side the Tennessee River.

The water is slow to fast moving depending on the previous rains. There are several places for good camping, but camp at your own risk, we try to find a camp site that's surrounded by water (island). Fishing is always good and for the arrow head hunters, the finds are usually very nice artifacts. I highly recommend touring the Flint for your hour trips and your long trips.

No accommodations or facilities along the Flint. Rough neck floating

No fees, only permit required is a fishing license to fish.

I-565 to Hwy 72 look for Flint River signs and put in at one of the over passes, Hwy 431 north bound put in at the first overpass, Hobbs Island road can be accessed from 431 south in New Hope or from 231 in Huntsville.

Most put ins and take outs along the Flint are accessed from underneath overpasses that people have converted into boat launches.
