Highland Lake - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip
Highland Lake is located in the Southern part of Maine boardering the towns of Falmouth and Windham. My trip departed from the public boat launch on the southeast tip of the lake. This was the first trip with my new Boreal Design Fjord kayak.
The lake is just over three miles long, making for a 6+ mile round trip. I had very calm conditions upon leaving the boat launch, but at the turnaround point at the north end of the lake the winds picked up, kicking up moderate whitecaps. With a stiff wind coming head on and two foot chop I headed back to the launch site. The return trip took about an hour, and along the way I saw a few mallard ducks and what looked like an osprey over head. I had the lake virtually to myself on this April morning.
My understanding is that boat traffic dramatically increases in the summer months, making this lake a destination better suited for the shoulder seasons of spring and fall. Overall it was a great trip... though not as much wildlife as I expected. Nice day trip from the Portland area.
Public boat launch. No toilet, no water, no food.
The State of Maine Public Boat Access site is on the southeastern end of the lake. Find your way to Blackstrap Road in Falmouth. Turn west on Mast Road and follow it for 1.6 miles to a right-hand turn onto Lowell Farm Road, which leads to the launch site. Signs are posted along this gravel road.
