Cowanesque Lake - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: September 14, 2008
Nearest City: Lawrenceville, PA
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: BEK

Description:

First time out on Cowanesque Lake with our yaks. It is a beautiful reservoir owned by the Army Corp of Engineers. We parked at the South Access and there is a $3 launch fee per vehicle (towing/hauling vehicle) not yak. The lake itself is just over 1,000 acres and offers recreation to any and all boat traffic.

It is quite scenic as the PA Wilds abound the landscape. There are nesting Osprey right on the lake and the abundance of wildlife we saw in 3 hours of paddling was excellent. This is a fantastic freshwater fishery as well.

Although you must watch out for motorized boat traffic the water was relatively calm with lots of shallow areas and islands that no boat other than a yak could visit.

Fantastic weather and a fantastic day!!!

Accommodations:

Daytime Picnic Facilities
Overnight Camping Facilities with Electric

Fees:

$3 launch permit per vehicle
$30 annual launch permit
$26 camping site w/ sewer & electric & water
$18 camping w/ no hookups

Directions:

From Route 6/I-99 North use the Lawrenceville Exit and travel Route 6 North to the 2nd signal light and turn left. Route 49 parallels the lake on the south side. The Northern side of the lake is NY State which can be accessed via Route 6 North or Route 17 South.
