Quinnebaug River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: September 7, 2008
Nearest City: Sturbridge, MA
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: Michael Vinyard

Description:

We entered Quinnebaug River at it's start on Lake Siog in Holland MA. Put in is across lake from picnic area. Access is easy to find.

When we got there river was high from the rains the day before. Corp of Engineers said river was running about 2 feet higher than usual. This made for a fast steady current. About 3/4 mile in there is a old bridge that wasn't high enough to go under due to high water, so we had to portage. Easy portage just to cross road. From there is was easy just going with the current.

They have 3 rest stops well placed with signs. Great time had by all. They say river is 5.5 miles to finish in Sturbridge at boat ramps. Boat ramp in Sturbridge is off of route 20 just outside of town.

Beautiful all along the river. Will be a nice trip in the fall when colors are out.

Accommodations:

Great parking at both access area.

Fees:

No fees

Directions:

Must leave cars at both Lake Siog access and at Sturbridge for pick-up and return. Lake Siog off Dug Hill Road in Holland. Look for Corp of Engineers signage and boat ramp in Sturbridge is well known as it's on the side of lake with Streeter beach and dam for the downriver of the Quinnebaug River.

Resources:

I just Googled and got a good map of river with details
