Connecticut River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip
This is the Connecticut River accessed from the town dock next to the Connecticut River Museum. It is a good paddle with amazing views of the river and marinas in the area.
You can get to the sound by heading south, if you go north you have a fairly busy marina...use caution...once past that the water can be a little choppy which is a fun thing if you know your boat and how to hit waves. It is a fairly busy part of the river but if you stay near each shoreline you are fine.
There is waterfowl aplenty, ranging from Grey Herons to Ospreys, about 1/3 of a mile up river you can carefully cross and visit Hamburg Cove... As you continue upriver the boat traffic lessens and the man-made marvels are replaced by natural ones. Abundant evergreens are the backdrop for some rock cliffs as well as some very interesting driftwood pieces in the water.
Be aware of the tides on this paddle as well as the wind as they can come into play during your time out. The water can be a little choppy so be on the lookout! This paddle can be as long or short as you like as you return to the town landing when you are finished.
Essex is a wonderful little town with much to see and do. A lot of inns and bed & breakfast's... plan to stay a while!!

Town dock. You can pull up to launch and then park. THIS IS A VERY TOURIST TOWN so parking may be an issue but if you go during the week it usually isn't an issue
