Garangua Creek - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: July 12, 2008
Nearest City: Newark, NY
Submitted by: Ryan Lewis

Description:

The entire trip was an easy paddle downstream on Garangua Creek in Wayne County, New York. We put in at Norsen's Bridge Park and kayaked down to Abbey Park where Garangua Creek meets the Erie Canal.

Due to being attached to the canal the water can be quite murky, but it also means that it has good water levels year round for kayaking. It is very quiet and easy with the most difficult thing being one or two downed trees in the river which actually aren't even really a challenge since the water is so slow moving.

Accommodations:

Norsen's Park has porta-potties but no running water so ensure you bring water with you.
Abbey Park has both bathrooms and running water.
Free parking is available at each.

Fees:

There are no fees or permits required.

Directions:

From Newark, NY head north on Route 88 for several miles until you reach Pulver Road. Turn right onto Pulver Rd. and head East for about a mile. Norsen's Bridge park will be on the right. This is the launch point (note: you could also launch by parking on the side of Route 88 where the bridge crosses the Ganargua Creek. The takeout is located at Abbey Park in Lyons, NY. Heading north on Route 14 into Lyons, take a left (west) onto Water Street. Head west for about 1/2 mile until you reach Abbey Park on your left just before the bridge.
