Rocky Gorge Reservoir - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: July 4 and July 11, 2008
Nearest City: Laurel, MD
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: Waterbug49

Description:

On July Fourth, there were a number of kayaks, canoes and flatboats (electric motor powered) on the lake. We put in at Supplee Landing. Although there was a threat of rain, the overcast and about 5-7 knot NW wind made for a comfortable paddle. This was our first time on the lake. The water level was slightly below the highwater mark along the shore, so we were able to paddle part way up a small stream that feeds into Scott's Cove. With so much bank and water activity, we didn't see much wildlife - a couple great blue herons (at a distance), a hawk, and a handful of turtles.

On July 11th, we could count the number of boats we saw on one hand. Noticed the water level had dropped at least 6 inches since the Fourth. This time we put in at Scott's Cove. We prefer Supplee over Scott's because the parking is close to the ramp. At Scott's Cove you can drive down, offload, but then you have to get back on the main road and drive back to the parking area. Once on the water, we were able to approach fairly close to 3 great blue herons fishing in the shallows inside a cove across from the Supplee launch ramp. There was a light breeze out of the north, so the water was perfectly smooth in many places. So quiet and so peaceful.
