We usually set out from the boat ramp at Raber MI.(eastern edge of Michigans UP in the St. Mary's river) and paddle three miles ESE to the island(open water). The landing site for check in is well protected behind a 1000' pier. From here the exploring and fishing are great, you can spend the day traveling the coast of Canada's St. Joseph Is. or island hop to Drumond Is. or travel north toward the locks up the river, or visit the fort on St. Joseph Island. Watch for the ships usually 9-10 every day pass within 100 yds. of the NW corner of the island. This location is listed on the Michigan DNR site and needs activity to justify it's existence
You won't be disappointed. Be prepared however we have encountered a day or two of rough seas and high winds. Salmon run late August/early Sept., herring run mid to late July.
