Description:

I had always heard about Stix River and decided to give it a try. I took off work on a Tuesday and took my gear that morning to a lil place that may or may not even have a name. They are on the river and rent tubes and canoes. They must do most all of their business on the weekends because they were very surprised to see me.

I gave the guy $40 and they gave me a ride in a '70 something Chevy pickup that was not having a good day. They dropped me off at a one lane bridge I believe is on hwy 64.

The river is very shallow and wide in most places. I was just getting the feel for the unfamiliar canoe when I heard the rapid. I decided why not just go for it.

I shot down the little rapid and smashed into an over hanging tree filled with skinny spiders! The current was pushing me forward but the over hanging trees would not let me go. After taking on some water I made it out and had a look around. This must be a popular spot for the locals because there are beer cans and bottles and trash everywhere. This makes me sick! I push on.

It is still early but I decide to find a place to camp. It's only 11 miles back to my truck and with the quick pace of the river I could do 11 miles in about an hour. So I set up camp and just relax. I should have brought beer…

If you want a peaceful trip go here on a weekday. The locals use this river on weekends for float trips.

Outfitting:

They rent out Coleman canoes. I like them very much.

Fees:

It cost me $40 for the canoe and the ride up river.

Directions:

You take the Wilcox exit off of I-10. You will see signs for a shooting range. Follow them. The tube and canoe place is at the end of that same road.
