Rudee Inlet - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: July 2001
Nearest City: Virginia Beach, VA
Difficulty: Easy

Description:

Sun was shining, air was 80 degrees with no wind, it was a good time to start. We put our boat of the day - a Keowee III - in at the boat launch just a couple hundred yards north of the Marine Science Museum, and took off south. The paddling was easy, and we took our time going through marsh. Eventually the route closed down on us (about 1/2 mile in), so we turned around and started paddling back toward the mouth of the mighty Atlantic. Rudee Inlet is just inside the Atlantic, and if you head north from the boat launch (another 1/2 mile or more) you reach the jetty and the open waters of the ocean. As we dodged the boats heading out for pleasure cruises or a day of fishing, it was nice to sit in the quiet waters and watch everyone moving about. Anyone else know of nice paddles in the Hampton Roads area?

Directions:

From Virginia Beach oceanfront - head south over the bridge, and proceed another 1/2 mile on General Booth Boulevard. Boat launch will be on your right, and has three six launch slips. If you get to the Marine Science Museum, turn around in the parking lot and go back 100 yards.
