Green River Reservoir - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Destination Report
Nearest City: Morrisville, VT
Difficulty: Easy

Description:

Green River Reservoir is Vermont's Newest State Park as of 3/99. The Reservoir is 653 acres with about 19 MILES of undeveloped shoreline. There are more than 10 Islands, some of which have primitive campsites. There are nesting Loon on the lake, as well as common mergansers, Great Blue Heron, ospreys, and occasionally bald eagles. Animals include Dear, Black Bear, Moose, etc. We paddled this lake for about 4 hours but did not cover all the shoreline! Had lunch on our very own 25-foot square island. Saw the Loon Nesting sites (Please stay 300 feet away!) as well as two loons that were so intent on feeding on a food source that they let us drift within 50 or 75 feet of them without becoming upset! This is an AWESOME place and I can't wait to get back! No motor boats or jet skis. Electric motors are allowed at 5 mph or less. There is a short carry-in of about 100 feet or so from the equipment drop to the launch site.

Accommodations:

There are 34 campsites, all primitive sites, I believe. Some have Pit Toilets or Outhouses, others do not. There are also several day use sites to have lunch at, etc.

Fees:

There are no day use fees to paddle the reservoir. Camping Fees are $4.00 per night per person, I think! That could change or be changed already.

Directions:

This is really one of those places that you can't get there from here! Pick up Rte 15 East North of Morrisville, VT, turn left onto Garfield Road towards Garfield, VT. At the tee at Garfield, turn right then very next left. Go out this road a few miles until you see signs for parking and the Ranger's Hut.
