Chambers Lake - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Destination Report
Nearest City: Coatesville, PA
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: Shanej

Description:

Chambers Lake is a beautiful body of flatwater nestled in Hibernia Park in Chester County just a couple miles from Coatesville, PA (about half hour east of Lancaster, or 45 mins West of Philadelphia).

I've been visiting the lake often as a hiker passing by on one of the park's many hiking/biking/horseback trails. But recently, I visited for the first time as a kayaker. The lake is fairly large and is home to many species of panfish, herons (I spent a half hour paddling around the shore trying to capture a better look at a Blue Heron), Eagles and other birds.

I paddled at first light when the lake was glass and the sun was just peaking above the dambreast at the far end of the lake. This is an easy paddle, perfect for a beginner like myself or for someone who wants to do a little fishing as well. The lake is large, but not large enough to get rough in windy conditions. I live within minutes of the park, so this will be my paddling home if you will. I would love some company, so let me know if you'll be visiting Chambers Lake.

Accommodations:

There is a parking lot and boat launch at the entrance to the lake described above. Camping is allowed in the park, although i am not certain if any camping is available near the water (I don't think so)

Fees:

No permits are required as this is a County Park, not a state park. However, it is encouraged you at least have a Launch Permit, which can be secured from the PA Boat and Fish Commission website.

Directions:

From the Route 30 bypass, exit at Route 82 (Coatesville). Make a left hand turn and go 200 feet or so and turn left on Rt 340 (turkey hill station on corner). Go about 2 miles and make a left on Wagontown Rd. From there just follow signs for "Chambers Lake". When you come out of the woods into the clearing, you'll see the lake on your right hand side.

Resources:

This is the website to Hibernia Park. You can find info and pictures there.
