Hocking River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Destination Report
Nearest City: Nelsonville, OH
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: gregling

The Hocking River is amazingly scenic for the industrial development that it has seen. Between Rockbridge and Nelsonville (where it travels through Wayne National Forest and Ohio's beautiful Hocking Hills), the River is primarily surrounded by forest. In other areas it winds through farmland, around the campus of Ohio University, and, eventually, into the Ohio River.

While day trips are reasonable, it is easy to organize a two-day+ trip down this river.

Since this river follows SR 33, there are many accommodations along the way. However, these become scarce once you're past Athens, OH.

The Hocking River follows SR 33 Southward from the town of Rockbridge to Coolville where it empties into the Ohio River. Access spots are abundant along this highway.
