Puskus Lake - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip
Located in the Holly Springs National Forest, Puskus Lake is a good destination for anyone looking for a short trip to fill a morning or an afternoon. Driving time from Oxford is approximately 30 minutes. The lake is located in a day use area for the National Forest and there is a $3.00 per vehicle day use fee. There are picnic areas, pit toilets and also campsites. Small fishing piers are scattered along one shore. It is rarely busy and is generally quiet. You may be the only boat on the water. Fishing boats are allowed, but it is a no-wake lake. There is a boat launch where kayaks or canoes can easily be put in, but you can also carry them down to the shore from the day use area.
This is a small lake and would be a good trip for beginner paddlers or anyone with children. It is possible to explore the perimeter of the lake within two hours. The back channels are abundant with wildflowers and are great spots to see birds and schools of fish.
From the north side of Oxford, MS take highway 30 east from highway 7. After about 10-15 minutes on highway 30 you enter the national forest. Look for the the sign for the Puskus Lake day use area. The gravel road to this area will be on your left. Drive along the gravel road until you reach the fee area (about 10 minutes).
