Coosa River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip
Day Trip Report
Contrary to popular belief, Alabama does have some great rivers for kayaking or whitewater canoeing. One such river is the Coosa, which flows north of Montgomery, directly through the city of Wetumpka. On Saturday, June 16, 2001, I enjoyed a kayaking trip on the Coosa. Our trip was made possible by Coosa Adventures of Wetumpka. The Coosa not only offers several groups of class II rapids, including the notorious "Moccasin Gap," but the river also incorporates several stretches of open water with breathtaking scenery. The river is relatively wide compared to Western whitewater rivers; therefore there are many combinations of rapids possible simply by favoring either the left or right bank. The Coosa is a wonderful whitewater river in the Deep South that is enjoyable for both beginner and advanced paddlers.
A high quality rental kayak (Perception Torrent)and equiptment costs $20 a day, a canoe and equiptment is $35, and the shuttle service is $8 per person.
Coosa Adventures is located off of U.S. Highway 231 in Wetumpka.
