Cold Stream Pond - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip
At just over 3600 Acres, Cold Stream Pond is a decent size lake. Unfortunatly the entire west shore of the lake is developed. If possible, paddle the barely developed east shore. The lake is spring fed so it stays relatively cool all summer. I paddled it the second week in May, about 3 weeks after ice out and the water was numbingly cold.
Since the main body of the lake is fairly round, it tends to get wind from all directions. The coves don't provide too much cover from wind. By mid day, the 20- 30 knot winds provided medium to heavy chop. I was there early enough in the season on a cool Sunday morning and didn't see any other traffic until I was getting close to the dock on my return. With many vacation homes, during the summer it can be relatively busy with traffic. I managed to see two loons nonetheless. If possible, give this lake a try mid-week, or early/late season to enjoy it almost to yourself.
From I-95 Exit 217 (Howland)take ME 155 east approx. 7 miles until you reach a T intersection. Take a right at the T onto ME 188. Take an immediate left onto Old Hatchery Rd. and the boat ramp is about 1/4 down that road. Ample parking.
