Ocoee Lake - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Destination Report
Nearest City: Parksville, TN
Difficulty: Easy

Description:

I came to Ocoee in 1944 and was raised on the Ocoee Lake. The lake was created in 1933 with the old CCC workers. Some of the old building foundations can be found. Some of the history can be found at the Forest Service Office on Hwy 64 going East pass the Ocoee Inn.

The Inn is the only commercial service around the lake proper. This could be a summer vacation area for sure. Advance planning is a must in that the seasons of activity can be booked full (www.ocoeeinn.com).

There is so much history here in this area it is impossible to tell it all. As for the lake itself, boating is a major sport and interaction with paddle craft coexist. Scuba Diving is done here but access to service will have to be done in Cleveland, Tenn.

This lake is deep at 100+ and a wet suit is recommended in that the deep water is cold. Fishing on this lake is a great time. It does not matter what season to visit just come and see it for yourself.

Access to other rivers in the area include: the Hiwassee River, Nantahala River, Tellico River, French Broad River, Chattooga River in North Georgia/North Carolina border.

We are blessed here in Southeast Tennessee.

Accommodations:

Lodging can be found locally from tent camping to house rental.
Ocoee Inn is a great place to make contact with for all items of interest (food).

Directions:

The location for this area is east of Hwy 411 on Hwy 64 East to Copperhill, Tenn. Forty-five minutes from Chattanooga, Tenn. Follow the directions from the Ocoee Inn website or the outfitter of choice.
