Houston Lake - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Destination Report
Nearest City: Perry, GA
Difficulty: Easy

Description:

Originally, Houston (pronounced: "house-ton") Lake was a private lake for the Houston Lake Country Club. It is now open to the public. Houses line the banks for the first 15-20 minutes of paddling. However, it is the back of the lake that makes the trip worthwhile (there is no put-in at the back of the lake).

Midway through the lake several trees and narrow land strips begin to appear. It takes on almost a swamp-like character. Spanish moss hangs from the trees. Wildlife is usually abundant. There are literally hundreds of turtles out on a sunny day. Several kinds of birds can be seen (cranes, Canadian geese, etc.). On my last two trips I have seen two copperheads. Some say that there are several alligators in the lake, but I have yet to see one.

Fishing is allowed at Houston Lake but catches are few and far between. The back side of the lake contains several stumps and shallows that fish may be caught in.

Accommodations:

There are no restroom (only a portable toilet) overnight facilities open to the public near the lake. However, accommodations can be found in Perry or Warner Robins.

Fees:

There is no fee for parking or for getting out on the water.

Directions:

Houston Lake is located on South Houston Lake Road. From I-75, take Exit 142 and proceed on Highway 96 until you reach the intersection with Houston Lake Road. Turn right and proceed about 10 minutes south. Keep a lookout on your right and you will see the lake.
