Creole Bayou - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip
Weekend Trip Report
November 3-5, 2006
Creole Bayou is a beautiful bayou off of the Pascagoula River. The Pascagoula River is one of the longest unimpeded rivers in North America.
We left on Friday evening headed for Creole Bayou. The area is not accessible by car so you must have a power boat to gain access to the area. There are privately owned camps lining one side of the bayou and state owned property on the other.
We booked our trip with Ecotours of South Mississippi. They provide room and board as well as transportation to and from the site.
Depending on the time of year, the current can move pretty quickly on the Bayou. It was pretty slack for our trip which made for an easy paddle. It is a beautiful paddle! We saw a couple of alligators on the trip (which made me a little nervous) and a ton of Osprey (little hawks). We saw one Bald Eagle on the way home. There was an abundance of wildlife on the banks of the bayou and on the Pascagoula River and its tributaries.
We paddled for about 4 hours the first day navigating the bayous with the help of the Eco Tour staff. I can see where one could easily be lost and they were a big help. If not booking through a tour company, I would definitely recommend a GPS and several charts of the area as well as a handheld VHF radio and a reliable cellular telephone.
We stayed at one of the camps that night and spent Sunday paddling a different, but equally beautiful route. It was a great experience!
The accomodations through Ecotours of South Mississippi were quite nice. They provided transportation to and from Creole Bayou on Boston Whalers. The fee included several eco-tours as well as the kayaking. Additionally they provide beds and hot meals and showers. All meals are provided. They also offer a more rustic camping experience.

Driving directions are a little tricky! There are a number of tour companies that will provide driving directions to their particular launch place!
