Lake Blackshear is an 8,600 acre lake in middle Georgia. It ranges from swampy areas near the shore to open flatwater. I encountered many powerboats during my excursion today. Fishing seems to be good at this lake.

There are signs warning of alligators, though I did not see any today. However, I did see many turtles and water fowl. I think birdwatching would be nice here during warmer seasons.

Once you leave the park area you will encounter homes built along the shore. You will have to paddle a while to get past these residences and back to a natural setting.

All in all, this is a good trip for relaxation, exercise, and maybe a little exploring in the tree stands near the shore.

Georgia Veterans State Park does have camping areas for both tents and RVs. Lake Blackshear Resort offers very nice accomodations. The resort has a marina for larger boats, as well.

Georgia Veterans State park has a $3 entrance fee.

Travelling on I-75, take Exit 101 in Cordele, GA. Go west about 9 miles and you will see the entrance to Georgia Veterans State Park and Lake Blackshear Resort.

The main office at Georgia Veterans State Park sells topographical maps of the entire lake; both waterproof and non-waterproof versions.
