Hamlin Lake - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Weekend Trip Report
Trip Dates: Summer 2006
Nearest City: Ludington, MI
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: murph

Description:

Hamlin Lake is a very nice lake connected to Ludington State Park. The paddling near Ludington State Park is nice, and the water trail is a nice couple hour paddle. Dunes and bald eagles are everywhere. Once you're a mile or two out of the park it is very crowded with houses and people.

At the far side of this large lake is a paddling trip through swampland. A trail is cut out of the swamp but the paddling here is tedious.

Paddle near the park and there are lots of nooks and crannys to explore. The weather can really kick this lake up, and a good wind off Lake Michigan can really kick up the waves. However, there are lots of protected places to paddle here.

Accommodations:

Very nice camping in the park. Hotels are also nearby.

Outfitting:

16 ft Old Town Cayuga
17 ft Cheasapeake Light Craft

Fees:

state park fee is $20.00

Directions:

Ludington State Park is north of Muskegon, MI on US-31.
