Long Pond - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: September 6, 2006
Nearest City: Southwest Harbor, ME
Difficulty: Moderate
Submitted by: TheFlatwaterPirate

With fog eating at the rocky Maine, Acadian, coast, we headed inland to the sunny skies of the north end of Long Pond in Southwest Harbor, ME.

Despite only a noticeable, but constant wind, the lake was a little choppy. So beginners beware on a windy day, especially if the wind blows from the north or south. The scenery was beautiful as we headed out from the public boat launch on the right hand shore.

We paddled around the bend (30 minutes) on the western side and into the south-west cove. If it wasn't a cool fall-like day we wouldn't have been able to resist swimming in the crystal clear water. This is one of the few ponds where swimming is allowed in Acadia. Even the cottages and Sea Plane on the water couldn't detract from this pond. But it is definitely better off-season before the wakes of the sleeping motor boats on the shore make it tough to paddle. We saw only one motorboat in our 3 hour paddle of the northern section.

There is a canoe/kayak rental place on the right on Pretty Marsh Rd across from the boat launch. The rates are high and they are quick to charge for every second you go over. Other than that it's a great deal.

Heading towards Southwest Harbor on RT 102 take a right onto Pretty Marsh Road. It will be on your left.
