Snake River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip
Day Trip Report
Jackson Hole, WY
My Tarpon 120 S.O.T traveled 2400 miles to get a drink of the Snake River. I ran the river by myself, but was able to shadow some commercial rafts on occasion. The river was a fast mover. I covered 8 miles of majestic scenery in under 2 hours. I was blessed with encountering a Grizzly on the bank of a sharp turn that cut deep into the mountains. On another occasion, I backed into an eddy, and watched a Bald Eagle preen himself, while its partner screamed above as it circled us.
The water itself was amazing, especially for a novice kayaker from Alabama. I encountered over a dozen class III and IV rapids such as the TACO, BURRITO, LUNCH COUNTER, as well as the Champange Hole, which was perpetually emitting thousands of effervescent bubbles! The river offered more than several avenues of attack on each rapid. I must admit getting tossed on 3 occasions, but quickly remounted and finished out the ride without much rock rash.
After shooting a couple of the rapids, I reversed and headed upriver to enjoy surfing a couple of waves. Besides the white water, I also took a trip on several wave trains, one of which lasted about one tenth of a mile.
The water was perfect, the scenery breathtaking, the wildlife abundant, easy put-in/takeout. Best kayaking experience of my life!
