West River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: June 25, 2006
Nearest City: Naples, NY
Difficulty: Moderate

Description:

The West River is part of the Hi-Tor Game refuge in the Southern Tier of New York State. It is accessible from a boat launch on Rte 245 about 5 miles east of Naples. It joins Naples Creek and empties into the south end of Canandaigua Lake.

The West River can also be accessed from Sunnyside Rd. about 2 miles farther East on Rte 245. There is no boat launch, but the water is easily reached across a small patch of grass.

The river is very flat, with marsh along the edges, and it meanders through the valley for about 4 miles between Sunnyside and the Lake. There is no noticeable current and few obstructions mid-channel.

Accommodations:

Naples is in the heart of the Finger Lakes wine country and is well suited for tourism. There are numerous bed and breakfast houses, small motels and hotels.
At the other end of Canandaigua lake is the city of that name, with an even greater assortment of accommodations.

Fees:

There are no fees or permits beyond the usual New York State boating rules and State refuge use rules.

Directions:

The Village of Naples is located on Rte 21, about 15 miles south of the city of Canandaigua. Turn onto Rte 245 and travel east for about 5 miles -- the boat launch will be on your left. Sunnyside Rd. will be a couple miles farther up on your left.
