Upper Hudson River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: July 11, 2006
Nearest City: Glens Falls, NY
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: Dennis B.

Description:

A great day trip in the Adirondacks on the clean, pristine waters of the Upper Hudson River. I estimate about 5-6 miles of navigable water, with additional miles of whitewater if so inclined.

I spent about 2 hours covering most of the wooded shoreline at a fairly relaxed pace. There are dams both North and South of the boat launch, the northern trip (+/- 4 miles) has state owned undeveloped shorelines and a large marshy area you can bird watch and explore. Great views of Gore Mountain. Lots of sites where you can pull out and enjoy a picnic or short hike.

The South leads to another dam (+/- 2 miles) and includes a public launch in Queensbury and alot of camps/homes. The river is very wide at points and there is some boat traffic on weekends but there is enough room for everyone. Probably quieter on weekdays before 4PM.

Accommodations:

Picnic table; separate fishing dock; boat launch dock...porta johns available.

Fees:

Free to public

Directions:

Exit 18 on NYS Northway, if from North Bound, exit to right and take an immediate right (100 yards) onto Big Boom road, public park/launch about 2 miles at end of road.
From Southbound, take left off exit, go over northway bridge.
