Little River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip
Day Trip Report
July 1, 2006
Mt. Gilead, NC
The Little River seems to have it's headwaters in Asheboro. It runs thru Troy and Montgomery County before entering Richmond Co. and Blewett Falls Lake. There are three dams below Troy so we put in below the last.
This is a low volume river, but we had flooding rains Monday and Tuesday. This being Saturday, there was a little muddy water to help the flow. The water is tea colored without any rain.
We (Chuck, Sharon, Jay and Smoky)put in at the Thickety Creek Rd. bridge. The water level was 4" below the base of the steel bridge pylon. This is about the min. for solo boats.
We paddled under the NC 731 bridge and took out at the NC 73 bridge. It was a 3.6 hr trip adding 1/2hr for lunch below Town Creek Indian Mound. We were disappointed there was no landing or access to the Town Creek Site. Be sure to check out this Historic Site after your trip.
The water is mostly flat with a few shoales to wiggle thru. A few downed trees from the storm posed no problem as the current was slow and they were easily threaded. Blue and Green Herons, Kingfisher, and turtles were the wildlife we spotted. There were no signs of civilization other than the bridges.
Mt.Gilead is the intersection of NC 73-109-731
Thickey Creek Rd is the Y off of NC 731
It may be named Pleasant Grove Rd. on some maps.
The shuttle is back to NC 731 and to NC 73 via Indian Mound Road.
