Elkhorn River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: Summer 2005
Nearest City: Arlington, NE
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: Dave

Description:

Arlington Bridge to Elkhorn Crossing SRA

An easy canoe on the Elkhorn River.
Access is somewhat challenging at the Arlington Bridge, but is best at the southwest side.
Trip is approximately 12 miles and can be done a steady paddle in four hours.
There are numerous sandbars to stop on, and some areas which are free of the ever-present downed trees which make for safe swimming/floating (keep your PFD on).

The Elkhorn River Crossing State Recreation Area is about 3 miles south of the HWY 36 bridge. Changing water levels can silt in the ramp, and last year it was very muddy pulling the canoes out. Otherwise, this is an easy, fun trip that our youth group has taken numerous times.

Accommodations:

No facilities at either end or on trip.
Towns within five miles at start and finish.

Fees:

No. Follow Nebraska boating rules.

Directions:

Put in at the Arlington Bridge, 5 miles east of Fremont, NE (1/2 mile west of Arlington, NE). Best put-in is the southwest side.
Out at the Elkhorn River Crossing SRA, six miles southeast of Fremont on old HWY 75.

Resources:

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission website has general overview information.
