North Canadian River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: May 2006
Nearest City: Oklahoma City, OK
Difficulty: Easy
Submitted by: Al W.

For the casual paddler looking for an easily accessed and not too strenuous afternoon, the North Canadian River just north of Lake Overholser is a great choice. Easy put-in on the east side of Overholser and within five or ten minutes, you're completely free of noise from cars or people.

After short rainy periods, the river is 3 to 5 feet deep and wide enough for a relaxed afternoon of paddling. The gently current runs north to south.

Start out at Overholser and paddle north through the Stinchcomb Nature Preserve or, if using two vehicles, start upstream anywhere between El Reno and Overholser and let the current help you along. The only hazzard is the occasional water moccasin that may swim across the river well ahead of you, but they'll avoid you as much as you will them.
