Albemarle Sound - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: April 2001
Nearest City: Edenton, NC
Difficulty: Moderate
Submitted by: Myriah Waters

Description:

This is my first trip ever with my new kayak. I dropped it in the water and was just going to paddle anywhere. The water was a little rougher than a first trip should be but it was also amazingly smooth in other places. The wildlife and homes are overwhelming. The trees tower above you and the spanish moss calls you over. So far a lot of untouched areas seem to be available for the nature lovers. At one point the locals had a couple of bald eagles flying around. If you need to rest at any point there are several docks with welcome signs posted. Also there is a park ranger who goes by the name of Ranger Rita that lives on this elegant sound and protects the wildlife and the forestry. And there are also some quite interesting objects available like hovercrafts that a retired air force computer engineer named "The Hammer" mass produces. If you need a little first aid a retired doctor and a cat crazed Physical therapist all live in the area. It was a delightful day trip with delightful people that I will make again this weekend.

Accommodations:

Several bed and breakfast joints as well as hotels.

Directions:

Edenton NC off 17 and follow the signs to the waterfront.
