Description:

We went on a beautiful 4 hour trip down the San Antonio river this weekend. Stayed at Goliad State Park, which was great - lots to see and do and the park staff were very helpful - especially Leah, who shuttled us to the put-in point. She is trying to get more paddlers on this river - it is not used much at all in this area.

The put-in was challenging - if you do it, bring some rope! But we managed. The river was muddy for the first couple of hours and we couldn't really stop and get out or we'd risk sinking but after a while we found some areas where we could get out and swim. We didn't see any people or evidence of people until the last 20-30 minutes, which was great. Lots of birds - we had two Little Blue Herons leading the way for us the whole trip. Saw some turtles and deer and the occasional cow. A man near the end of the trip said he had good bass fishing.

The river is protected by high banks on both sides which kept the majority of wind off us. Lots of trees (alive and dead) - only a couple of hairy navigating moments. The take out was not as challenging as the put-in, but was muddy. All in all, a great way to spend an afternoon. We will definitely go back!

Accommodations:

Goliad State Park was really nice - nice nature walk, Mission, and the Bahia across the road. Great Park staff!
There are a couple of hotels as well in Goliad (2-3 min. from the State Park)

Fees:

Just the State Park fee if that's what you choose.

Directions:

From Goliad, take 59 west to a bridge - drive under to the right and put in - you have to go through a gate - just close it behind you so the cows don't escape...
