Suwannee River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Day Trip Report
Trip Dates: March 19-20, 2006
Nearest City: Live Oak, FL
Difficulty: Moderate
Submitted by: lee19 View Profile

Description:

We paddled the Suwannee River from White Springs Boat Launch to Canoe Outpost at Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park with a lay over at Wood's Ferry. The River was at about 60' above sea level, the current was moderate and the weather was in the high sixties to low seventies.

The river offers great scenery, a lot of birds and we even saw a small {3-4'} gator sunning it self on shore. Wood's Ferry is a brand new camping area run by the Dept of Forestry and offers sleeping platforms which are covered and screened in with a light and ceiling fan{not what we expected, but enjoyed}. It also has running water, flush toilets and showers. The water here did not taste too bad and was not over chlorinated as it is in New York State Parks.

Over all my wife and I had a very enjoyable paddle on the Suwannee River and look forward to returning for another stretch of the river.

Accommodations:

Woods Ferry offered a paddlers dream as far as accomadations and the host there even helped carry our equipment up the ramp to the platforms.

Fees:

At this time there was no fee for using the platform, but he said they planned on charging in the future, but also said there are plans to put these facilities about every 10-12 miles on the river.

Directions:

From Interstate 95 in Jacksonville we took 295 east to 10 and then 10 east to Live Oaks where we made arrangements with Canoe Outpost for a shuttle to White Springs.

Resources:

We purchased William Logan's book on the Suwannee River
