Salem River - Kayak Trip / Canoe Trip

Report Type: Destination Report
Nearest City: Salem, NJ
Difficulty: Moderate
Submitted by: Ben Ford

Description:

From the put on Fenwick paddle west to the Juncture with the Salem River. This is near the Penns Neck Bridge of Route 49. Unless you are confident of your ability to cope with swift tidal currents (up to eighteen knots) and eddies caused by tidal currents do not turn south under the bridge. You may take any of the channels straight or to the right. These run among the islands in this tidal meadow. About 1/2 mile upstream on any channel you will come to a very large tidal pond (Mannington Meadow) Often geese or ducks are on this pond. If the tide is falling if you enter the pond be aware that much of this is mud at low tide. In the channels between the Islands I Have seen otters. This is also a popular fishing area. I return to the put in to take out. Good for a couple of hours paddling.

Directions:

Off NJ route 45 just north fo the bridge entering. From route 49 take route 45 north about 1/2 mile over the bridge, Turn into the driveway of the motor vehicle agency on the left. Go around building into rear of parking lot. Put in from the edge of the parking lot. Go around.

Launches:

Carry is only 20 ft. The bank is stabilized with rickrack. If tide is below half mud is exposed. (I try to go out on the rising tide and return before the tide falls too low, 2 to 3 hrs.).
