Description:

I'm a single mom.... 41 and very active and fit. I'm about the only paddler in this area and would like to get more interest on Lake Cumberland. It's over run with motorboats in the summer, but the other 3 seasons is quiet and beautiful! I woke up at 5:30am and went to the fishing creek boat ramp in Somerset to put in at sunrise. What a wonderful way to start the New Year! The water was very low and so the ramp area was not used and had to put in on frozen mud and break a thin sheet layer of ice. It was 24 degrees at put-in. I paddled about 10 miles that morning. The sunrise was beautiful and I saw a couple blue herons and a kingfisher or two. I was enjoying the morning paddle so much that I didn't even think what the take out would be like. I had to get out in froze, stinky, greasy mud and drag my boat to the ramp. The mud about sucked my Tevas off..... Then I had to walk barefoot to get my jeep and load up. Of course no one is out this early especially in a little boat. lol. It was 32 when I took out.

There are a lot of other places to put in on Lake Cumberland that are very nice. There is a nice restaurant that one can pull their boats up and have a little wine and good food. There are a lot of beach areas for nice picnics as well.

Accommodations:

Somerset has about a 68,000 population and offers several good hotels and restaurants. There are no outfitters for kayaks (at this time...hmmmm?). There is one whitewater outfitter South of here for the Big South Fork River.

Directions:

From I-75 in SE Kentucky, take highway 80 west to Somerset. Highway 27 joins and head South to several put in areas. Burnside State Park has a good put in as well, but that's on the main part of the lake.
